I attended a one week ski clinic offered by Sofa Ski. The camp was well run and I definitely improved my skiing. I liked the ski area, albeit the lift systems need to be upgraded. I can only imagine how long the lines would be during the high season.
The restaurant and shopping areas are very limited. Arranging a taxi or having a car would enable you to drive into the other areas of the city (not walking distance to the ski slopes) and enjoy more options.
The vibe is very different from Niseko, which is a good thing. We also did a day trip to Kamui, which was great for variety of terrain. Tumamu is also nearby.
Transporation
There are several bus companies from the airport to Furano (stopping at multiple hotels). I booked via klook.com.
When to go
To be safe as in much of Hokkaido, Jan and Feb are ideal.

Accommodations
Several camp members stayed in a house nearby, which is walkable to the lifts but not recommended if traveling with children. For ski in/out, the Prince Hotel is ideal: https://www.princehotels.com/en/ski/furano/resort.html
Guides/schools/rentals
I would recommend Sofa Ski for improving your ski fundamentals as a precursor for off-piste/powder skiing.
Tips/Resources
A car is recommended in order to explore the nearby resorts, buy groceries (if renting a accommodation with a kitchen). Or hiring a backcountry guide.
Some other camp members were planning a intro heli skiing trip in Revelstoke: https://www.cmhheli.com/first-time-heli-skiers that sounded awesome.
